Part 2 โ Content Search & Filtering
Part 3 โ Verse Mode Search & Multi-Translation View
Getting Started
The Bible Explorer is HolyExplorer's dedicated scripture lookup tool. Look up a single verse and instantly see it in all five available translations side by side. Read a passage across an entire verse range. Search the full Bible by keyword or phrase. It is also the panel that opens automatically when you click a scripture reference link inside an AI chat response.
Accessing the Widget
- Log in to your HolyExplorer account at dev.holyexplorer.com
- Navigate to Account โ App, then click the Bible Explorer tab in the top navigation
- Or go directly: dev.holyexplorer.com/account/#app/bible-explorer
The Interface at a Glance
When you open the Bible Explorer tab you will see:
- Explorer tab bar โ three lookup modes: Verse, Range, and Search
- Control panel โ input fields for the active mode (translation, book, chapter, verse)
- Results area โ verse text, multi-translation comparisons, and search results
- Left edge toggles โ two small buttons on the left edge for quick access to the controls overlay and the main navigation tabs
- Filter button โ appears at the bottom of search results to narrow results by translation, testament, or book
The Three Lookup Modes
The Bible Explorer offers three distinct ways to view scripture, each accessible via the tab bar inside the widget.
Look up one specific verse and see it displayed across all available translations simultaneously โ perfect for in-depth study and word comparison.
How to use it:
- Select a Translation from the dropdown
- Select a Book from the dropdown
- Enter a Chapter number
- Enter a Verse number
- Click Submit
What you get: The verse displayed in all five translations (KJV, ASV, WEB, CPDV, DRB), a translation count badge, a Share button, and a Translation Sources attribution link at the bottom.
Psalm cross-references (Catholic translations): When you look up a Psalm in CPDV or DRB, the widget automatically shows the alternative Psalm numbering used in the Catholic tradition โ helping you navigate the one-number offset between Protestant and Catholic Bibles (e.g., Psalm 23 in KJV = Psalm 22 in CPDV/DRB).
Read a continuous block of verses within a single chapter across all translations at once โ ideal for reading parables, teachings, or complete passages.
How to use it:
- Select a Translation, Book, and Chapter
- Enter the From verse (starting verse number)
- Enter the To verse (ending verse number โ must be in the same chapter)
- Click Submit
Example: Book = John ยท Chapter = 3 ยท From = 16 ยท To = 21 โ displays John 3:16-21 in all five translations side by side.
The Search Tab
The Search tab has two distinct modes, switched by a Text / Verse toggle at the top of the controls panel.
Text Mode โ Keyword and Phrase Search
Search for words or phrases across the entire Bible database. This is the default mode when you open the Search tab.
- Confirm the toggle shows Text on the left (default)
- Type your word(s) or phrase into the search field
- Optionally select a Translation to search within (leave as "All Translations" to search across all versions)
- Click Search
Results show up to 100 verses per page with your search terms highlighted in each result. Each result is a clickable link โ clicking it opens the full multi-translation verse view. Use the Previous / Next buttons to page through large result sets.
Verse Mode โ Reference Lookup by Text
Type a Bible reference directly instead of using the dropdowns โ the fastest way to jump to a verse you already know.
Switch to Verse mode using the Text / Verse toggle (circle moves to the right). Then type your reference:
| Format | Example |
|---|---|
| Single verse | John 3:16 |
| Numbered book, single verse | 1 Corinthians 1:1 |
| Verse range | Genesis 1:1-3 |
| Numbered book, verse range | 2 Timothy 3:14-17 |
For a single verse, the full multi-translation view opens (same as the Verse tab). For a range, the full multi-translation range view opens (same as the Range tab). If the format is not recognised, a message will appear with the correct format to use.
Filtering Search Results
After a Text mode search returns results, a Filter button (funnel icon) appears at the bottom of the results area. Clicking it slides open a filter panel from the right side of the widget.
| Filter | Options | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Translation | KJV, ASV, WEB, CPDV, DRB, or All | Show results from one version only |
| Testament | Old Testament, New Testament, or Both | Narrow results to one half of the Bible |
| Book | Any book present in the results | Narrow results to a single book |
- Filters apply instantly as you change the dropdowns โ no extra button click needed
- Multiple filters can be active simultaneously
- Click Clear All Filters to reset and return to the full result list
- The filter panel closes when you click the โ button or click anywhere outside it
- The filter button is only shown after a text search โ it does not appear on single verse or range lookups
Edge Toggles
Two small buttons appear on the left edge of the widget when the Bible Explorer tab is active. They provide quick access without touching the main header controls.
| Toggle | Icon | Position | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings toggle | ๐ Book icon | Upper button | Opens and closes the Explorer controls overlay (the panel containing Verse / Range / Search tabs and input fields) |
| Navigation toggle | โฐ Hamburger icon | Lower button | Shows and hides the main widget navigation tabs (Chat, Bible Explorer, Bible Reader, Bible Digital Media) โ maximises reading area |
- Both toggles change colour to show their state: blue when the panel they control is open, grey when closed
- Edge toggles are only visible when the Bible Explorer tab is the active tab
Available Translations
The Bible Explorer covers all five translations available across HolyExplorer. When you look up a verse or range, all five are shown simultaneously by default.
| Code | Full Name | Tradition |
|---|---|---|
| KJV | King James Version | Protestant |
| ASV | American Standard Version | Protestant |
| WEB | World English Bible | Protestant |
| CPDV | Catholic Public Domain Version | Catholic |
| DRB | Douay-Rheims Bible | Catholic |
To see results from a single translation only, use the Translation filter in the Search filter panel, or select a specific translation in the Verse / Range dropdowns.
Translation Sources
At the bottom of every verse or range result, a Translation Sources link appears. Clicking it opens a modal showing the copyright and attribution information for each translation displayed โ useful if you plan to quote a verse in writing or publication.
Sharing Verses
Every verse or verse range result includes a Share button (share icon, top-right of the result). Clicking it opens a share dialog with options to:
- Copy the formatted verse text (with reference and translation labels) to your clipboard
- Share through your device's native share options (on mobile)
The shared text includes the verse reference and the full text from every translation displayed in the result.
Integration with the Bible Chat Widget
The Bible Explorer and Bible Chat Widget are designed to work together seamlessly โ you can move between theological discussion and scripture reading without ever leaving the page.
This two-way flow makes it easy to:
- Ask the AI about a theological topic, then instantly read the scriptures it cites
- Verify the context of a passage mentioned in a chat response
- Jump from discussion to in-depth study of a specific verse or passage
